The electrolytic bath where our two cannon will be restored
This sign was erected at Cannon Square on December 2, 2008, two days before the cannons were removed from the square. Its purpose is to inform the public why the cannons are missing and when they will be returned. It also includes a website where interested citizens may check on the background and status of this restoration project.
Bob Abramson, past President of SVIA, oversees the lifting of the first tube off of its carriage and wheels. Bob has volunteered his time to oversee the cannon restoration portion of this project. He took care of getting all the bids and will personally drive the two sets of wheels to the Amish country of Pennsylvania, where they will be restored this winter.
The first cannon tube being lifted from its carriage
As the cannons go up, the flag comes down temporarily to prevent damage to the flag from the airborne cannons.
Next, the wheels and carriage are lifted off the mounting base. Bob Abramson has also designed a new mounting system which will alleviate pressure on the wheels while eliminating the unsightly concrete block shown in this picture.
With the wreath on the front door of Ben Blake's house, this picture makes the cannon wheels/carriage look like Santa's sleigh on his roof.
First carriage is lowered to the truck to join up with its tube for the trip
over to the Deschenes and Cooper shop in Pawcatuck.
One down, one to go.
The interior of one of the tubes shows the effects of 227 years of corrosion by the sea.
